The Warehouse Supervisor acts as the main contact point between the Operations Manager on one hand and the junior Operations workers, loaders and storekeepers on the other. Important functions that fall under their jurisdiction of this job position include performing supervisory and technical functions that ensure the smooth operation of all processes in the warehouse.
A Warehouse Supervisor is involved with organizing the transportation, storage, receipt and shipping of all kinds of products that require the use of a warehouse. In addition to these functions, warehouse supervisors are also responsible for hiring new employees and ensuring their proper training. They are also expected to prepare schedules and assignments on a daily basis for the workers, loaders, and other staff members of the warehouse followed by the timely preparation of reports on the numerous activities being undertaken in the warehouse from time to time.
The educational qualifications required for this position are not very demanding. A basic college degree is adequate though one can enroll for specialized courses in warehousing, and logistics. This can help them attain senior posts like those of an Operations Manager in a short span of time. There are agencies that provide on-the-job training for this position, in addition to simple classroom teaching. However, the type of training may vary from one organization to another depending upon local factors and requirements.
Most operations supervisors start off by joining as workers or clerks and then progress upwards. It is while performing this role that they get acquainted with all the various processes like shipping, warehousing, receiving products, loading, unloading, inventory management and customer service. Maintaining the workhouse and ensuring cleanliness of the warehouse is another task they have to oversee.
The remuneration offered to prospective candidates is normally attractive. While this job may require them to work in shifts, and even during weekends, they are often paid for working overtime, thus increasing their chances of earning more money. With experience, they can contemplate starting their own businesses or providing consultancy services to large warehouses.
