Individuals who come under the purview of this job function could be in Industrial Hygiene, General Commercial and Light Industrial, Industrial construction, Industrial Maintenance, Industrial Mechanics and Industrial painting and repairs.

These individuals must be highly skilled in each of the work areas and should be proficient in carrying our their responsibilities. The ideal candidate must have specialised knowledge in their respective areas, excellent team spirit and very good organisational and management skills.

Ability to solve routine to complex problems, assist with the business processes, perform different maintenance, fork lifting, fabricating, welding, painting and the capabilities to perform general repairs are some of the important duties associated with this job function.

Basic certificate courses in the specific areas of work is a must. These persons must be willing to work long hours and in shifts, must possess a strong physique and should be mentally alert. An eye for detail and the importance of commitment and responsibility play a very crucial role.

As the job title suggests, the main job of a HGV Driver is to operate heavy vehicles mainly Trucks, Lorries, Trucks pulling trailers and other vehicles over 7.5 tones, both nationally and internationally. Apart from performing the main process of driving the vehicles, they are also responsible for planning and scheduling the journey as per employer requirements.

They are usually accompanied by assistants during the trips to oversee the loading and unloading functions. HGV Drivers are also responsible for the documentation procedures commonly required when driving along Inter State Highways. In most cases, they also undertake routine maintenance of the vehicles under their control.

The job of a HGV Driver is usually very demanding as they may be required to drive for long distances and during odd hours as well. Though the basic working week lasts in excess of 45 hours, they mostly work overtime to enhance their earning potential. They should possess excellent driving skills, must be fully aware about the road safety procedures and rules, should be able to concentrate for long periods of time and be physically fit to handle the rigors of the job functions.

While candidates planning to pursue a career in this profession do not require any formal qualification, they must have a basic knowledge of both the local language and Mathematics to perform basic monetary calculations. However, Apprenticeship courses are available for those under the age of 24. But it is important that they possess a valid HGV license obtained from an authorized Driving Institute. Eyesight and sense of hearing must also be normal.

HGV drivers are usually well paid. Though they can start off working as an assistant or as an apprentice, they can quickly progress with experience. While job trends may vary from region to region, attractive opportunities usually exist in places near major manufacturing hubs or big warehouses. Most HGV Drivers can start off their career by employing themselves with logistic companies and transport carriers. After obtaining the necessary experience and exposure, they can also consider self-employment wherein they can operate their own fleet of vehicles.
