Qualified Social Worker

The chief responsibilities of a qualified social worker are to work directly with adults, children and families to improve their lives to the best possible standards. A social worker helps individuals/families to function in the best way they can in their environment, resolve their issues and make life more qualitative and meaningful at every step. The various issues a social worker may have to resolve include marital discord, wife abuse, child abuse, extra marital affairs, incest behaviour, child discrimination, inadequate housing and even social abuse.

The social worker has to offer assistant and support to prevent child protection interventions thereby helping the children. These persons also have to undertake therapeutic work and deal with children in distress, difficulty and also handle sensitive issues such as substance misuse, domestic violence and suicide. The person will have to visit clients, liaise with other social care professionals, make accurate assessments of foster care-takers and make in-depth reports on the same to be able to deal with the issues in the most effective manner in the interests of the children.

Social workers have to be very mature on an emotional platform, objective, and sensitive to people and their problems. They must be able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain very good working relationships with both, their clients and co-workers.

The ideal candidate must possess a strong personality, a lot of energy and should be enthusiastic making a difference to the lives of the children who are facing difficult situations. The person should have prior experience in child protection and family support work. A minimum qualification is a bachelor’s degree in social work. One can progress towards senior positions like those of a supervisor, program manager, assistant director, or executive director of a social service agency or even the department with an advanced degree and related work experience. Rent Arrears Officer

A Rent Arrears Officer holds responsibility for recovery of all the concerned rent arrears assigned to him/her. The person will have to monitor various rent accounts, a maximizing of the rental income, paying visits to the tenants and offering them benefit advice. Serving notices, accurate preparation of documentation for any legal action, representation at court and the arrangement and attendance of evictions form a part of the job function of this work area.

The rent arrears officer has to have the knowledge and understanding of the various housing laws pertaining to arrears, deal with internal staff, departments and must have an in-depth understanding of benefit systems and direct deductions.

Candidates must possess a certified qualification to work in this job function. The person should have a strong personality, should be able to deal with tenants firmly, negotiate to the best of his/her ability and also have very strong communication skills to be able to deal with them in the most assertive and effective manner.

Resettlement Officer

A Resettlement Officer is chiefly responsible to provide practical and social support to people suffering from severe and enduring mental health needs in the community. Some of the most important responsibilities associated with this job function include visiting the clients at their residences, assessment and reviewal of the services provided, ensuring that their physical and personal needs are met appropriately and assisting them in their daily practical tasks e.g. shopping, hygiene and even sensible managing of their budgets.

A resettlement officer will have to be sensitive and respond positively to challenging behaviour, seek support when necessary, offer training to understand the social and emotional problems of various people and help them to manage the same in a practical and sensible way. In addition to these, the person will have to attend case review meetings, participate in the reviews within the agency and maintain accurate records.

Besides these, the person will also have to ensure a highly safe environment for all concerned and believe and maintain a non-discriminatory attitude. This will entail offering an unbiased behaviour towards all in all the possible interaction with the various individuals on a consistent basis. The person will have to adhere to the Council’s equal opportunity policy towards all in an extremely supportive manner.

Resettlement Worker

A Resettlement Worker is responsible is to work in coordination with the community to offer services e.g. advice, assistance on a mental and physical platform, health and security and other support services to the youth and others like refugees, migrants, homeless to help them achieve their goals.

The resettlement officer should possess relevant knowledge governing this area and should be capable of giving the necessary assistance e.g. in matters of housing, employment, education, health and working. He/She should be able to work and liaise with a wide range of agencies.

The individual should have an in-depth knowledge of and understand the hopes and requirements of refugees.

The resettlement worker will have to work closely and in harmony with the resettlement officer and help him/her to understand the various issues and council the concerned the individuals in the appropriate manner. The person should be capable to collect the correct information from the individuals, discuss the same with the resettlement officer assist him in resolving the same in the most effective manner. Planning effective support packages is another important characteristic of this work area.

A basic university degree qualification in this work area is a requirement and the individual should possess some prior experience with a proven track record. A pleasing personality combined with the ability to get along well with people facing health, mental and other problems are essential characteristics of this profession. The person should also have the ability to work along in a team, have good communication skills and should be computer literate.

Residential Social Worker

A Residential social worker could be assigned the responsibilities of the elder folk or children. The work area is a highly specialised one where the individual must possess relevant skills to be able to deal with the concerned individuals.

The residential social worker must know how to assist the concerned persons by providing them with the necessary safety and a homely environment. He/She will have to develop new techniques and approaches to work towards their caring, developing individual interests and understanding attitudes. The person will be totally responsible for the safeguarding and protecting the welfare of every single person.

A residential social worker has to assist in establishing and maintaining positive and trustworthy relationships, foster a sense of security, ensure that proper and correct medical care is made available at all times, administer tests to guage individual progress, adhere to guidelines, handle complaints in accordance with the procedures of the organisation. Some other duties include managing the financial aspects honestly and sincerely, managing the petty cash on a day-to-day basis in the most professional manner and handle complaints in accordance to the policies established by the organisation.

The person will have to work closely and in co-operation with the other staff in the department, professional agencies, and other personnel and should hold prior experience in the same.

The ideal candidate must have a degree in social work and this should be combined with a successful experience of at least 2 years.

A residential social worker should have a very friendly yet firm personality, should be sensitive to the issues of the various persons and at the same time maintain the requisite discipline on the premises and amongst the residents. Encouraging the children towards a more healthy lifestyle and the elders towards a positive attitude, making each one feel cared for and important are some important characteristics of a social worker.
