Care Assistant

A Social Care Assistant works in close coordination with a social worker for the community or work area assigned. Some of the important duties of a Care Assistant include obtaining all relevant information about the residents in that area, their families and arranging accurate documentation. Establishing a healthy relationship with all the families and keeping them informed about the various resources in the community.

The person must be able to work in harmony with the concerned social workers as well as the nursing staff. The person should be able to obtain all the social history of new residents, prepare for any/all care conferences and related activities, implement and execute new care plans, maintain progress charts on all those under their care and regularly update the same.
Provision of community support, Family Support for complex social, communication, and organisation gatherings and accurate planning and organising the life those assigned to their care are some of the other duties associated with this work area.

The ideal candidate must have the requisite and recognised qualification in social care services, health course and even food and hygiene. Knowledge of psychosocial practices is advantageous and preferred. The person must be able to work in perfect harmony within a team, possess excellent oral and written communication skills and must be able to maintain total confidentiality of all the individuals whom they provide services to. A basic and recognised education is a must and this is very often in accordance with the rules established by the state. Individuals must have a minimum of at least two years of experience in a reputed health care organisation.

This is an industry where one works more for the job satisfaction than the monetary returns and this satisfaction is derived by the results one’s sincere efforts reap in the end. The appreciation and the gratitude from the various people who have been taken care of is by far the most rewarding aspect. Salaries and prospects are totally dependent on prior experience and a good work record.

Care Manager

A Care Manager’s services could be hired for a range of responsibilities. These could vary from taking care of children in the age range of 12-17 years who could be having emotional or behavioural patterns to managing the living of the adults in their respective homes for as long as possible.

In the first case, the individual will be responsible for providing and monitoring a very qualitative standard of communication, understand their needs and help them to manage stressful situations, help them to combat the use of drugs and teach and make them understand the ethics of life. In addition to these, the care manager will have to educate them on the values of a family and human relationships, care and consideration of fellow being and will have to maintain and update their progress records.

As far as caring for older individuals is concerned, the person will have to understand their phobias, insecurities, their disabilities, their wants and help them to overcome the same in a very matured and understanding fashion. Some of the important duties will include conducting psychosocial assessments of these adults and based on these assessments the development of care plans which will be implemented in the interest of the adults. The care manager will have to resolve all their issues in the most amicable manner. Thus the person will also be responsible to help these individuals lead a dignified life without the support or aid of others and make them feel they are living a qualitative life.

The ideal candidate must possess a degree in Geriatrics and must hold a license to practice clinical social care. A degree in Social Work is preferred though not a must but the other desired qualifications would be in gerontology, nursing, psychology, health and human services. Excellent organisation and management skills are a must. The person must have excellent communication skills and should be able to handle groups in an effective and efficient manner. Compensations and growth towards senior positions or setting up one’s own establishment / consultancy are dependent on one’s expertise, experience and a successful work record.

Day Centre Worker

A Day Centre Worker has to lead and motivate a committed team of volunteers to deliver varied play and caring activities. The person is solely responsible for fostering and maintaining very strong relationships with the adults/parents and the other caretakers. This will have to be done by them in a very supportive way. In addition to working with adults they will also be responsible for the children assigned to their care. Kids of varying backgrounds and cultures will be nurtured, their skills strengthened and their talents tapped to the maximum.

The person will be responsible for the efficient running of the different departments e.g. the toy library, provide requisite training support those who are new on the job or have just completed a course in day care or in play toy library work experience.

The ideal candidate must possess the NVQ3 qualifications. The person has to have excellent motivational and communication skills and should be sensitive to the concerns of those assigned to his/her care and be able to resolve all their issues.

An unbiased attitude towards a range of people from different backgrounds and the commitment to strive for their best are highly essential qualities of this individual. A pleasing personality, patience and courtesy to all is a pre-requisite.

Salary packages and growth prospects depend on one’s abilities and the efforts with which one tries to successfully achieve the objectives of the organisation.

Homelessness Officer

A Homelessness Officer’ chief responsibility lies in interviewing and assessing the needs of the homeless as well of those who are at a risk of becoming homeless and must possess the requisite ability to take the right course of action / decision.

Some of the other duties are to coordinate with the accommodation officer to arrange for temporary accommodation for the homeless along with other facilities like storage and removals, liaise with the concerned medical officer to avail of his/her advice on the homeless households, liaising with external agencies e.g. case conferences, complete all home visits allotted on a certain day, collate statistics, report accurate information and deal promptly and efficiently with all correspondence.

In addition to these, the person should be able to handle any/all emergency situations, adhere to the rules established by the Council of Housing Services, account for all financial expenses and maintain total confidentiality about the details of the various personnel they are catering to.

The ideal candidate must hold a recognised qualification in the subject of Homelessness, a work experience of at least two years and should be committed in his endeavours. A pleasant personality, the ability to get along with people from different backgrounds, computer literacy and good organisation skills are a must.

One can always grow to senior positions and better salary packages by proving one’s success in their work. Compensation packages are the most competitive in the industry.

Hostel Worker

A Hostel Worker’s role spans various work areas. These include maintaining order in the hostel, ensuring that there are sufficient goods and services to cater to the residents in the hostel and assuring high levels of hygiene, safety and security to all. Most of the duties are administrative in nature and combined with other semi-skilled responsibilities as well.

The person may have to deal with individuals of different backgrounds, cultures and temperaments as well as disabilities also and must possess the necessary abilities to be able to manage them all in the most friendly and yet firm manner.

Keeping a vigil on their actions, maintaining a code of timings, ensuring all the hostel residents are adhering to the various norms established by the authorities are some of the other duties. An eye for cleanliness, proper maintenance of basic amenities like electricity, water, rations and ventilation are some of the duties which come under the purview of this work area.

The qualifying individual will have to be very cordial and possess the ability to get along with people from different walks of life spanning cultures, age and behaviour patterns. Understanding their demands, catering to their requests when important and assuring them of the best services with the assistance of the other individuals at all times are some of the important duties of a hostel worker.

In addition to these the person will have to maintain a constant and healthy relationship with all, maintain individual reports on their ailments, complaints, issues, phobias and also keep a track on their progress. Besides these, a good rapport with the other outside agencies e.g. health & safety, medical and even the law. An individual must hold basic education, possess excellent organisation and communication skills and a strong personality to manage different personnel and situations.

The salaries are dependent on the person’s efforts and skills and one can progress to the rank of a hostel officer or management positions by proving a successful work record.
