Pharmacist

A Pharmacist’s chief duties include the compounding and dispensing of prescribed drugs in a retail or healthcare facility environment. The person has to transfer prescriptions, interface with physicians, computerize and maintain the relevant data and review the utilization of all the drugs. The Pharmacist is responsible for the safe, accurate and rational distribution of pharmaceutical agents to clients, patients and designated hospital areas.

The qualifying candidate requires a bachelor's degree. A Master’s degree in pharmacy and a license are pre-requisites for one who desires to set up his/her own practice. The area of work is wide-spread and ranges from Pharmacy to retail, clinical, product translation, nuclear, home care and a technician as well.

Individuals must be have a thorough knowledge of all the standard concepts, practices, and procedures. The person has to have good communication skills, a patient persona and a friendly and understanding personality is a must as a Pharmacist is constantly interacting with patients, students, vendors and people from a wide range of society.

The hours of work are extremely long and one must be passionate about his/her work to put in so many hours on a regular basis. A certain amount of creativity and latitude is required.

The salary packages of employed personnel depends on their academic qualifications and their work experience. The growth prospects are attractive as one can progress towards senior positions depending on the success of one’s track record.

Pharmacologist

The job profile of a Pharmacologist involves the study and research and the effects of drugs, gases, dusts, and other materials on tissue and physiological processes of animals and human beings. Individuals must have familiarity with the multiple species of laboratory animal handling, accuracy in observation, and skills for making the appropriate data interpretation. Accurate reporting of data and the maintenance of the same is a must Persons also have to well-versed in record keeping and reporting of oral and written data.

Persons regularly experiment with animals e.g. rats, guinea pigs, and even mice, to understand the various reaction of drugs and other substances on functioning of organs and tissues. They have to be proficient in understanding and noting the effects on circulation, respiration, digestion and other vital processes.

The Pharmacologist is responsible for standardizing the drug dosages and/or the methods of immunizing against industrial diseases. This is performed by correlating results of animal experiments with results obtained from clinical experimentation on human beings. Other functions include the investigation and preventive methods, remedies for diseases like silicosis, lead, mercury, and ammonia poisoning, analyses of food preservatives, colorings, vermin poisons, and other materials to determine any toxic or nontoxic properties as well as standardizing procedures for the manufacturing of drugs and medicinal compounds.

The person must have excellent written and oral communication skills as they have to interface with various personnel and at times even with research teams. Independent judgement, good team spirit, out-of-the-box thinking, accurate prioritizing of skills and a professional focus are pre-essentials of persons working in this area. A person must possess a Ph.D. qualification and at least 2-5 years of experience in an appropriate industry.

Compensation packages differ from country to country and organisation to organisation. A person must be willing to upgrade his/her skills on a regular basis to be on par with the best in the area of specialisation.

Physicist

A Physicist’s duties include carrying out research work in physical phenomena, observe and develop theories and laws and devise methods to apply the same to industry, medicine and other fields.

Persons have to perform experiments with masers, lasers, cyclotrons, betatrons, telescopes, mass spectrometers, electron microscopes, and other equipment to observe the structure and properties of matter, transformation and propagation of energy, relationships between matter and energy, and other physical phenomena.

Physicists have to describe and express the various observations they make and conclusions they infer in mathematical terms. They have to devise procedures for physical testing of materials, conduct instrumental analyses to understand and determine the physical properties of materials.

Physicist can specialize in one or more branches of physics. These include Acoustics, Astrophysics, Electronic, Cryogenics, Electricity and Magnetism, Fluids, Radiation, Laser, Mathematics, Health, Plasma and even nuclear physics.

The compensation packages are in accordance with the individual’s skills and performances and the growth prospects depend on one’s initiative to work on a successful track record. The area of work involves long hours of work, immense dedication, and total commitment.

Researcher

A Researcher is perennially involved in research and production activities in a laboratory. Other duties also include the setting up new instrumentation and ensuring instrument preventive maintenance. Biological scientists work in applied research or product development. They use knowledge provided by basic research to develop new drugs and treatments.

Those who conduct research usually work in laboratories and use electron microscopes, computers and a wide variety of other equipment. Some conduct experiments using laboratory animals or greenhouse plants.

Researchers are found in all every stream of science. The range of specialized research includes Microbiologists, wildlife biologists, zoologists, the human genome specialists, botanists, biochemists, aqua-biologists and many others.

A qualifying candidate must possess a Ph D in the specific area of knowledge. This must be combined with at least 4 years of work experience under the supervision and guidance of a successful senior.

Compensation packages are in accordance with the norms of that particular organisation and growth prospects depend on a person’s proven skills in the area of research.

Veterinary Nurse

A Veterinary Nurse provide plays assistant to the Veterinary Surgeons in examining and treating of sick and injured animals. All veterinary nurses are academically trained from a veterinary college and this is a pre-requisite qualification.

The duties of veterinary nurses include participating in the various operations which are conducted in the clinics and undertaking diagnostic tests which are directed by the veterinary surgeons.

In addition to these, they also have to dispense prescribed medications and prepare surgical theatres for the concerned operations. They have to assist the veterinary surgeons in all aspects of all the surgeries which are conducted and have a genuine caring for the ‘animal patients’ treating them as they would human patients. These persons have to maintain the cleanliness of the kennels and other shelters where the animal patients may be housed for treatment and have to ensure the appropriate meals for them.

All veterinary nurses have to be academically trained from a recognised veterinary college. They must have an innate love for animals, their treatment and well-being and be able to handle them with care and feeling. Individuals should be capable of handling stressful situations and be physically fit to handle large sized animals.

In addition to these, the veterinary nurses also have to carry out diagnostic tests such as x-rays, laboratory work and ultra-sound, interpret them correctly, immunize animals against different forms of disease and should be strong to provide euthanasia to the old, sick or terminally ill animals.

They have to have thorough knowledge of providing the correct documentation for animals traveling abroad, insert microchips in them and maintain all records correctly, issue certificates which are in compliance with the prevailing legislation in that country and should be able to consult as well as provide the requisite counseling to the said owners of the pets/animals.

The nurses must have a patient and very understanding personality, a friendly nature to reach out to the animals. All veterinary nurses must have a qualifying degree from a recognised veterinary college to qualify for an entry level job.

The work is physically demanding. It involves long hours, dedication and real devotion to the profession. Starting salaries are reasonably attractive. Growth prospects are based on performances and highly dedicated individuals can set up their own practice.

Veterinary Surgeons

A Veterinary surgeon is solely responsible for preventing disease and for providing medical and surgical treatment to ill animals. Veterinary surgeons are responsible for the prevention of disease and prescription of all requisite medication and treatments which may be required to nurse the animal back to good health.

These persons have to also carry out and interpret diagnostic tests such as x-rays, laboratory work and ultra-sound, immunize the animals against different forms of disease, arrange for euthanasia for the old, sick and terminally ill animals, offer kind and appropriate caring for the in-house animal patients, provide the correct documentation for animals traveling abroad, insert microchips into animals and maintain correct records, issue certificates according to the prevailing legislation of that country. They should also be skilled to offer appropriate counseling to the owners of the concerned pets

Veterinary surgeons must possess a patient bearing to be able to deal with the animals in a loving way. A qualifying degree from a reputed and established veterinary college is a must for them to be able to perform all the functions of this profession.

A veterinary surgeon’s profession demands long hours of work and complete dedication towards animals. A person must have at least 3-4 years of work experience in a similar work environment and must constantly upgrade his/her skills to progress towards better prospects.

One has to acquire the requisite registration to be able to set up individual practice/set up their own medical clinic. The monetary aspects of this job are highly good as these individuals can offer personalized care/services for animal lovers especially for those who travel a lot and need to keep their pets in caring and responsible hands.
