Area Manager

An Area Manager’s chief responsibility is to implement the appropriate retail strategy for the store/chain of stores he/she is working for. The person’s responsibility lies towards designing a productive sales plan, efficient management of the staff, timely and amicable coordination with colleagues and senior personnel and very effective pre and post sales customer service.

The person will have to make appropriate forecasts for Sales after a thorough study of the market, the demand for the various merchandising and all other related factors. An Area Manager must possess the requisite skills to motivate the existing staff, offer them the necessary guidance, solve their problems, and should be an excellent communications individual to interface with the customers in the most professional manner.

In addition to these, the person should be skillful to initiate special activities like discount programmes, promotion activities and campaigns for a specific line of products, make in-store presentations, tie-ups, etc towards the achievement of established targets and goals of the store. The person will also be responsible for stock usage, meeting of deadlines, inquiries and meeting all queries in the most satisfactory manner. One has to have a creative bend of mind, keep an eye on competitors and be quick to strategise more effectively than the others to be ahead in the rat race.

A qualifying candidate must posses at least 5-6 years of experience in retail sales and its operations. A degree in business administration is advantageous and preferable though a college degree with a few years of experience in the same area of work will be equally welcome.

Long hours of work is something one has to be ready for in the retail industry. The industry is rewarding as it offers ample opportunity to grow, meet, interact and service people from all walks of life and society. Compensation is dependent on the individual and his/her potential.

Cashier

A Cashier must be friendly, fast-paced and energetic to fulfill his/her role to the hilt. The role of a Cashier is one of extreme responsibility. The individual has to be very careful and cautious in handling the cash as any loss incurred would become his/her liability.

Cashiers must have a passion for crunching numbers especially when due to some contingencies, they may have to make manual calculations to dispense cash. These individuals must be very focused, alert and cautious in their transactions. A good memory becomes a pre-requisite for this job profile.

An ideal candidate should have a basic education qualification, excellent command over English and a very pleasing personality. The person must have a mature outlook and should be able to deal with people of different personas with equanimity and courtesy.

The job involves long hours of work, handling and total accountability of the cash at the start and end of each day and this requires the person to be very dedicated and responsible towards his job function.

Though no real academic qualification is required, a high school diploma would be advantageous and this should be combined with excellent command over the English language.

Salaries are competitive and growth prospects to senior positions like Administration Officer would be dependent on one’s ambitions and personal efforts.

Floor Manager

A Floor Manager in any retail outlet is highly responsible for the productivity related to that specific area assigned to his management. The person is normally given total control of the specific area and is responsible for driving sale through implementation of highly productive strategies.

The complete layout of the store, the merchandising, training and motivating of the staff and maintaining consistent levels of customer service, cross selling across the store. The person has to be intelligent, street smart and market-savvy to understand the changing trends in the industry, competitive pricing and competitors’ strategies to be able to formulate effective moves to counter the same.

In addition to these the individual must have the capability to liaise with the suppliers to make timely deliveries to be able to meet the customer demands on a consistent basis.

An ideal candidate must be a people’s person, should possess a strong and yet a very amicable personality and should be a self-starter to initiate activities within the assigned territory to attract the targeted customers and generate additional sales.

The person must possess basic academic qualifications, have excellent command over English (oral and written) and have the ability to deal with customers across different rungs of society in a firm but amicable manner. The job profile involves long hours but is satisfying by way of its opportunities of interfacing with people across society.

Growth prospects are excellent with perks but are entirely dependent on an individual’s personal efforts and skills. Compensation packages are the most competitive in the industry and one can progress swiftly towards better prospects on the strength of their achievements.

Merchandiser

A Merchandiser’s role entails the management and analysing of the stock in the store. The person is responsible for all aspects of merchandising, planning, liaising with the suppliers, the warehouse authorities/personnel and the other branches if any, in the most cooperative and professional manner.

The person has to have immense commitment to the job function and should be a good team player, computer literate and have excellent technical and management skills. A very crucial feature is to have an eye for detail and has to ensure the management of the retail stock to maximize the sales and minimise stockholding. The person has to constantly monitor the market trends, manage the performance range and forecast sales and profit through a consistent analysis.

A qualifying candidate must be highly qualified with technical knowledge, budget management combined with a college degree and requisite experience in a similar area of work. Other necessary attributes are good negotiating skills, analytic skills, excellent communication skills and management of people.

This job profile carries good salary packages and a lot depends on an individual to prove his/her capability in the function. Growth prospects to senior positions are related to performances and one can progress speedily with the right skills and proven work results.

Purchasing

A Purchaser’s most important characteristic is to possess excellent negotiation skills. The individual must have in-depth knowledge of the market, the ever-changing trends, the fluctuating and fickle demands of the consumers and formulate appropriate techniques to avail of the best to cater to the targeted audience.

The Individual must have excellent management skills, thorough knowledge of the market, excellent negotiating skills to acquire the best deals to optimize the most lucrative results. The person must have the knowledge to source out the best sources of the required merchandise for the store and should be able to sustain a very healthy relationship with all the concerned suppliers.

The ideal candidate has to be a good team player and have strong conviction and interpersonal skills. In addition to maintaining good relationships with the external customers, this person has to have the knack to deal with the internal customers as well especially the marketing personnel who in turn will be responsible for the promotion of the goods and services.

In addition to these, the person must have the requisite capabilities to enter into mutually beneficial commercial agreements, acquiring of interesting discounts on a long-term basis and yet maintaining the quality aspects of the products to meet the needs of the consumers.

An ideal candidate will hold a college degree with specialising in Purchases though this is not a pre-requisite. However, individuals with a basic degree combined with a few year’s of experience in the same area will also be suited for this job function.

A pleasing personality, friendly and mature understanding and an aggressive nature to deal with in particular, imposing suppliers are some of the essential qualities of such a person. Growth prospects are interesting for the aspiring but require a successful track record. Compensations are the most competitive in the industry.

Store Manager

A Store Manager is totally responsible for the successful functioning of the store he works at. The range of responsibilities include expertise at visual merchandising and display, timely replenishment of stocks and stock-taking as well. The individual must be able to display the highest standards of salesmanship.

A keen eye for detail, a creative bend of mind, and a flair to present and display the merchandise in the most alluring and attractive manner to draw the necessary crowds and inspire them to make purchases. A strong but friendly personality does full justice to this job profile.

The ideal candidate must have good leadership qualities, enthusiasm to maintain the highest standards of store sales and should be dedicated to his role in the capacity of a Store Manager. Long hours of work and dealing with dissatisfied customers are two of the crucial features of this job profile and the person should be able to maintain his cool irrespective of the circumstances.

Salary packages are competitive and the sky is the limit for achievers. One can swiftly progress to senior positions by proving a consistent and successful work record.

Store Staff

 
The Staff of any Retail Store has to be impeccable in their mannerisms, personality and overall behaviour. These persons must possess excellent communications skills, must have great interaction qualities and should be of an extremely helpful nature.

All store staff must have a basic education to their credit. Many students or undergraduates take up such employment and pursue their studies by attending night college/classes. One must be willing to work long hours, have the requisite patience to deal with grumbling customers and be willing to go that extra mile to satisfy their customers to the hilt.

The ideal candidates would be those who have a basic education to their credit, are confident in their approach to customers, excellent at making the requisite pitches and converting the same into productive calls. These individuals must be able to identify the need of the customers who arrive in the store, assist them towards the same and guide them at every step of the purchase. They should also possess the wisdom to stay out of irate customers who would prefer to shop themselves without any external assistance.

The growth prospects for such individuals is excellent provided one is willing to enhance their skills. A constant search to acquire better skills in customer service, sales and better communication and management skills gives these individuals a wonderful chance to climb the ladder at an interesting pace.

Compensations are feasible for such individuals at an entry level and better packages are dependent on their personal achievements and work related performances.
