Carpenter

A Carpenter has to manage various sites. The individual must possess extensive skills and should be able to manage sites with multiple employees and trade contractors.

Some of the important functions associated with this job profile include the carrying out of planned and preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance and breakdown maintenance of building services and installations. These have to be done in accordance with the current legislative standards and within the guidelines and service level standards.

A Carpenter must have immense knowledge of residential construction, remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, safety and applicable building codes. The person should be proficient in blueprint reading and should be capable of doing layouts, framing, finishing of typical projects, and must have the ability to draw appropriate sketches to communicate details to employees and others as well.

A pre-requisite attribute for any Carpenter is mathematical knowledge and analytical skills which are absolutely necessary to do material and labor estimates. The person should be able to organize progress of multiple employees and trade contractors on a single site, identify potential schedule conflicts and generate and implement needed modifications.

The individual should be able to complete and fulfill all requisite paperwork required for various purchase orders and time sheets. The job of a Carpenter is a highly physical and laborious one. A person should be willing to work long and late hours depending upon the project and the urgency of its completion. A basic high school qualification is a must for one to develop the requisite skills associated with this job description. Remuneration is entirely dependent on the individual’s skills and performances.

Electrician

An Electrician normally works in construction projects, installing new electrical lines, boxes, circuit breakers, outlets and switches for both homes and businesses.

Electricians could be assigned different tasks. Electricians work in a variety of positions across a wide range of industries. Reading blueprints, installing electrical components to architectural and code specifications, running wires through conduit, testing wiring connections with test equipment like volt/ohm meters and oscilloscopes, testing or repairing electrical based equipment and working closely with engineers, general contractors or architects. They could be delegated jobs anywhere e.g. at the airport, resort, or even at the wastewater treatment plant.

To qualify as an Electrician, one should have immense knowledge of electrical construction and maintenance, including installation of all sizes of electrical conduit, cables, wires, switches, automatic starting equipment, and pole line construction. The individual should be well-versed with occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions as well as the National Electric Code and relevant City codes.

Assignments are received by sketches or blueprints. Work is performed independently or under the general supervision of a Lead Electrician, Electrical Maintenance Foreman or other supervisor with inspection upon completion for quality of work.

The job of an electrician is a physical job in all its entirety. These individuals have to often work in extremely hot, cold, dirty, wet or cramped conditions and at times are subjected to hard rigors like high voltage electricity. Such situations pose danger to one’s life and they must take appropriate safety precautions at work.

Electricians must also always test their work properly to insure their safety and the safety of future occupants and the buildings they work on to assure the same to the occupants.

To qualify as a professional Electrician, a person must have good mathematical skills to be able to perform any mathematical computations which the job may demand at times.

A qualifying degree in this area is a must for someone to take this up as a career. The compensations are commensurate with one’s performances.

Glazier

A Glazier’s job profile includes a myriad of functions. Some of the important ones include installing glass in windows, skylights, store fronts, and display cases. This may also be done on surfaces such as building fronts, interior walls and even ceilings.

A Glazier has to outline or pattern on glass. For all the various functions, a Glazier has to use special tools to avoid accidents which may occur by the usage of glass.

Some other functions include fastening glass panes into wood sash with glazier's points. A Glazier has to have in-depth knowledge to set glass doors into frame and fit hinges, install metal windows and door frames into which glass panels are to be fitted.

A Glazier may be designated according to the type of glass installed as Glazier, Structural Glass (construction); Plate-Glass Installer (construction). The basic requirements to qualify as a Glazier are to possess a high school education coupled with course skills in skilled crafts or trades training.

The job of a Glazier is a time consuming one which requires an eye for accuracy and detail and the person has to be highly knowledgeable as to the provision of the same to achieve the desired results. The compensation comes with accompanying commissions and is based on each individual’s performances and proven track record.

To qualify for the position of a Glazier, a person should possess a successful a Level 7 Glazier Senior I program or must have at least five years experience in glazier trade. The person should be intelligent enough to pass the required test for Level 8, Glazier, Senior II.

Painter & Decorator

A Painter’s chief responsibility lies in the refurbishment of a property / premises which may be assigned to him/her. The individual has to make very precise and accurate estimates for all the jobs which he/she may be assigned. The person has to plan all the related activities in the most appropriate and organised manner, provide assistance / guidance to those who are lower down the ladder of hierarchy, select genuine materials and ensure that the entire Project – from inception to the completion of the job is done efficiently and to the desired results.

The other duties include would involve making a survey of the said premises to determine the repairs which are needed and make logical estimates and schedules for the completion of each Project accordingly. Other duties may include artexing, emulsion and gloss and wallpaper hanging as well.

To qualify as a Painter, one must posses a high school graduate degree/certificate or a GED. Some companies /organisations insist on a technical certificate and the person should qualify accordingly. The individual must also have work experience of at least 5 years in all the areas of painting. These would include both, interior and exterior. A qualifying Painter must have the experience of using a variety of application tools and methods and reading design drawings accurately.

The rewards are huge depending on each person’s work results and skills. While many painters set up their own successful businesses others take up huge projects as challenging assignments and reap rewards through sheer display of their creative skills.
