A Technical Author is chiefly responsible for designing, writing, and producing end-user and internal API documentation. The person has to plan and create the relevant components of documentation, including programmer guides, user guides, installation guides and help systems.
The person should be experienced to create screen shots, diagrams, and other graphics needed to illustrate documentation, perform peer copyediting and proofreading and create templates for printed and on-line layouts.
An independent and self-started, a technical author should possess excellent written and oral communications skills, strong organizational skills and have an eye for detail.
The qualifying candidate must have work experience of at least 6-7 years in writing end-user and programmer documentation for software products. Experience as a lone technical writer would be an added asset.
Individuals qualifying for this job profile must have sufficient experience in reading complex technical engineering documents and interviewing product engineers to obtain information and experience of understanding and documenting APIs written in a major programming language such as C, C++, Java, or JavaScript.
Important requirements are working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Acrobat, and help authoring tools. Other assets include working knowledge of XML or SGML. Besides these, the technical author should also have working knowledge of CV's, ClearCase, of bug tracking software and should be very familiar with
Adobe Illustrator and SVGs.
