Project Manager

A Project Manager has varying levels of responsibility and authority. From the development and updating of the project to releasing schedules. He/she is also responsible for the management of cross-functional project schedules, in addition to regularly interfacing with senior managers on vital issues. In a nutshell, the role involves the successful planning and execution of the entire Project.

The spectrum of Project Management is vast and applies to almost every industry. A Project Manager has to work in tandem with engineers involved in the Project, and develop project timelines, schedules and resource assignments. He/She has to be capable enough to liaise with engineers and professional service teams to communicate project status and potential risks.

Determining project viability, understanding the plan and the project, and determining the most feasible and reliable resources are some of the important functions of a Project Manager. A probing mind, technical management project experience, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, a thorough understanding of web application architectures, development techniques, product functional specifications and problem-solving skills are the successful traits of a Project Manager.

A bachelor’s degree will be useful in this industry though a certified course in Project management is also accepted at the entry level. A high ranking –post, it offers great rewards for those with creative and innovative skills.

Quality Manager

A Quality Manager’s chief role is to oversee and implement the best quality practices in the organisation. A Quality Manager has to develop and integrate quality systems that address all aspects of customer perceived activity. This position also includes overseeing that the clients’ quality policies are coordinated throughout the organisation, monitoring business responses and problem resolving systems that address customer concerns, and budgeting and controlling the various costs of the quality standards of the organisation.

The person will also have to participate in vendor development and selection programmes and assure that the vendor base is a complete participant in the improvement activities.

A qualifying candidate for this industry must play the role of a catalyst for research, aswell as define, implement and optimize quality standards and procedures throughout the organisation.

A Quality Manager must have the ability to advise and implement Quality Assurance procedures ensuring productive results to the organisation.

To be a successful Quality Manager, one needs to possess sound technical knowledge relevant to the organisation, along with excellent communication and persuasive skills complemented with a lot of tact and diplomacy. The person needs to be completely aware and well-versed with international best practices and benchmarks.

Besides the above traits, a Quality Manager needs to have analytical skills and adopt a logical approach to solving all problems existing in the organization.
A technical degree is a must for all those aspiring to pursue a career in this industry. A highly demanding profession, one can make it big by sheer grit and perseverance.

Structural Engineer

A Structural Engineer is involved with the design of load-bearing structures. The person will be fully responsible for designing structures utilized for various practical purposes,

Structural Engineers are also responsible for the efficient use of funds and materials in order to build the best structures. While apprentices may design simple beams, columns, and floors of a new building, an experienced engineer will design more complex structures, such as multi-story buildings, skyscrapers and even/or bridges.

A Structural Engineer should be able to successfully design a structure, which will be able to withstand the loads specified to be placed upon it. In fact, advanced technology has made it possible for structural engineering professionals to make complicated calculations in a more speedy and accurate manner. Additionally, a Structural Engineer must have excellent concrete and steel design experience, a good understanding of architecture and an innate desire to contribute to the building/construction environment. Good IT and communication skills and the expertise to prepare technical schedules are other key attributes.

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering is a must for pursuing a career in this industry. In most cases, –a position in this industry is highly rewarding for those who are aggressive and are independent decision-makers in all situations.

Systems Engineer

A Systems Engineer is responsible for providing systems engineering support to new and ongoing programmes within various departmental business units. A Systems Engineer’s key functions include developing and managing system requirements, the managing and executing of trade studies, design integration, verification/test planning, and integration.

A Systems Engineer has to participate in the design and implementation of document and image management software solutions for clientele, coordinate and work with the Project Team to successfully deploy and install software and hardware while at work at the customer site. The person will also have to fulfill technical requirements for post installation support such as diagramming network architecture, technical documentation, application integration, and database design.

Besides these, the person will also have to provide support throughout the pre-sales, post installation time period by email, phone, and also by making personal visits to the work sites.

A Systems Engineer is expected to successfully customize software solutions suing ASP, HTML, Java, Visual Basic, and other application development tools to create new applications for different vertical markets.

A BS in Engineering is an essential qualification in order to qualify for a Structural Engineering position. A person needs to have very strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.

Technical Administrator

A Technical Administrator handles contracts, project schedules and assists the technical team leaders.

The key responsibilities of a Technical Administrator are to oversee all the technical aspects of an organization's website. The person has to constantly upgrade and maintain servers, hardware, software, telecommunication connections, e-mail, and security systems.

A probing mind that can investigate system errors, perform backups, and ensure user accessibility and site performance will do well in this industry. A degree in computer science and related technical work experience can easily qualify one for this position.

A technical administrator is responsible for all the basic technical tasks within an engineering environment. The person needs to have excellent communication and organisational skills, and has to be computer-savvy, especially in Word and Excel.

A technical administrator must possess a basic appreciation of engineering and design issues. The person should also have the ability to understand simple technical drawings and diagrams. A technical administrator’s key duties includes the maintenance of relevant databases, overseeing budget expenditures and the organising consultancy sessions with external organisations.

A positive, friendly persona that will help deal with clients in an honest and efficient manner, an independent decision-maker and the aptitude to resolve all problems within time frames will help the person to progress faster towards senior positions and rewarding compensations.

Telecommunications

Telecommunications is one industry which must be having a very broad spectrum of areas. It includes radio, telegraphy, telephony, data telecommunication and computer networking.

Telecommunications could be point to point or point to multi point which in other terms is called broadcasting. The various areas of telecommunications required specialist skills and vary from industry to industry.

A telecommunications engineer has to analyse the physical properties of the line or the transmission medium and the statistical properties of the message in order to design the most effective encoding and decoding mechanisms.

A telecommunications person plays a key role that needs experience, reliability appropriate skills and the ability to work both part of a team and independently. The person should be able to develop and coordinate the implementation of new and enhanced customer service systems and programs, schedule, prioritize and dispatch requests for installation and servicing of telephone equipment, respond to inquiries and research and resolve problems related to transactions handled by the team.

Other functions include participating in the analysis, design, development, and implementation of associated computer systems and applications, as required to meet the evolving needs of the operation. Developing recordkeeping procedures and management of department records in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and standards also fall under his purview.

A person pursuing a career in telecommunications needs to identify his area of interest and then qualify himself with the requisite academic knowledge in telecommunications and fibre optics. Globalisation has made this industry advance at a galloping speed and prospects are all related to individual efforts and proven results.
