Mainscale

Individuals aspiring for a foothold in this work area have a range of responsibilities to fulfill. They must have complete working knowledge of the National Curriculum and statutory working requirements. They must possess a commitment to provide a curriculum that ensures a high standard for all pupils, have welldeveloped inter-personal skills, commitment to staff development, and a positive approach in their work and relationship with others.

Main scale position teachers have to be well organised and must be able to work under pressure. They must possess skills to teach according to the needs of the hour based on the curriculum, thereby offering equal opportunities to the students. In addition to these, they will have to monitor and report to parents on the progress of their students, and regularly assess the student’s achievements and progress in accordance with the norms established by the school. Maintaining class registers, observing and abiding all school policies and working in coordination with both the teaching and non-teaching staff in an amicable manner are the other key functions of these individuals.

A basic degree in Education is a must for all those who fall under the purview of this work area. Salaries and growth prospects are commensurate with one’s experience and proven track records.

Newly Qualified Teachers

Newly Qualified Teachers are individuals who are freshers with an inborn passion for teaching. They are not able to teach in a maintained school or a non-maintained special school if they are not able to undergo an induction period after acquiring a qualified Teacher Status.

These individuals must present their unique characteristics in the area of education to impact upon the institute or organisation where they seek employment.

A strong personality and a positive attitude is a must and individuals must be willing to put in hours of patient caring and attention. Good oral and written communication skills are compulsory in addition to having a caring and understanding nature.

NQT’s are often given temporary or contract-based opportunities as part of their induction period. It serves as a learning experience as individuals are exposed to the nuances of this work function. Salaries are dependent on the individual’s efforts and skills, which in turn helps them to secure the job on a permanent basis and with a reputed institute.

Second in Department

A ‘Second in Department’ position involves a situation where there is no teacher-in-charge with the result that the individual has to take substantial responsibility for a distinct curriculum area within the department.

The various responsibilities include assisting and working closely with the Head of Department in discharging his/her duties, as well as taking independent responsibility on mutually agreed areas. In addition to these, the individual has to develop a specific area/s of the department's work, which may be described in the department's strategic plan. This could include functions such as the administration of examinations, managing the induction, monitoring and support of the students as well.

Other important duties include helping the Head of Department in identifying and meeting the professional development needs of the department and of individual members of the department. These could have been earlier identified through the departmental strategic planning process and the College's appraisal scheme. They may also be required to assist the Head of Department in the induction of staff in the subject area, as and when required. They may also have to deputise for the Head of Department when required and to represent the department at meetings, working groups, etc as agreed with the Head of Department.

The salaries in this position are commensurate with the individual’s experience and background and one has to prove his/her abilities to progress towards senior positions.

Senior Teacher

A Senior Teacher’s role entails the supervision of the various responsibilities of the other teaching staff who may be reporting to the individual. The responsibilities vary according to the area of specialization and could range from providing special education to children who are physically challenged to teaching various subjects.

Individuals will have to offer guidance and provide staff training, supervise the functions and also handle case management. This may include performing functions like writing individual education plans/curriculum development, data collection, writing of reports and managing students/children in the most caring and understanding manner.

A thorough knowledge of the area of specialisation is a must for one to be able to discharge his/her duties in the manner required.

Individuals must possess a degree in Education and one has to regularly upgrade his/her skills in the area of knowledge to graduate towards senior positions. Salaries are commensurate with the individual’s experience and individual track record.

Student Teacher

A Student Teacher is normally employed in secondary schools. They normally teach at least two different courses. These individuals are responsible for making accurate and keen observations of the progress of the students in the various areas/subjects, their level of understanding and presenting the said observations to the teacher/ senior teachers to make an analysis accordingly.

In addition to these duties, the individual is also supposed to review the skills of the students in other disciplines, the strengths of the teachers in the same disciplines and also be a participant in the departmental and staff meetings. A Student Teacher has to keep a report of any absences or irregularities by students and teachers and report them to the concerned authority on a regular basis.

A Student teacher must complete his/her student teaching and has to submit a minimum of at least four mentor/novice coaching records before he/she completes the student teaching. These individuals have to submit their lesson plans to the concerned authority in the said University within the specified time-frame and this has to be normally done at least two days prior to the teaching of the lesson.

The format of the lessons should be in accordance with the teaching principles established by the governing education body in that particular state/country. Student teachers normally complete their grades at their schools.

While remuneration is dependent on the school authorities, growth prospects are extremely good as individuals can prove their abilities that would lead them to progress towards better paying and senior positions.

University Lecturer

 

A University lecturer has several important responsibilities. Some of these are planning, designing and delivering educational programmes in their specific areas of specialisation. The individual has to design relevant academic course materials and deliver timely modules on a range of specified subjects. It also requires them to use appropriate teaching materials and assessment methods. All necessary revision and improvisations in the content of the curriculum and the delivery of the same is the chief responsibility of the University Lecturer.

In addition to these, the individual is also responsible for supervising the projects of the students, guiding them on academic and personal matters, assisting students with requisite support services whenever the need may arise, and preparing the lectures, tutorials, laboratory and all other relevant teaching content. Recommendations of important and useful book-lists, coordinating the submission of work for necessary assessments and marking the students in accordance with the University rules and norms are other functions of this role.

The individual will also have to offer the requisite assistance to the external examiners, and engage in the requisite professional and pedagogy research and scholarship. This may include offering support to innumerable teaching activities as well. Assisting and guiding colleagues with less experience, helping with the internal and external quality assurance processes, participating in team, departmental and School meetings comprise the other key functions. They may also have to undertake duties assigned by the Head of Division on certain Subjects. Coordinating the development of the curriculum and planning for the same along with liaising with the regional and local partners are some of the other secondary functions.

Prospective aspirants to this position are expected to have a very mature and understanding nature to interface well with students, understand their problems, offer them the requisite guidance and provide counseling whenever required. This has to be combined with teaching experience at a post-graduate level.

A PhD qualification is highly recommended, though a Master’s degree combined with at least 6-7 years of experience in the specified area of knowledge is also acceptable. Salaries vary from country to country though they are attractive enough for one to accept the responsibilities of this position. Providing consultancy services, delivering guest and corporate lectures, and being a part of an advisory panel at corporations are some of the other interesting prospects a person can look forward to.
