Company Accountant

A Company Accountant normally reports to the Finance Controller or the Managing Director of an organisation. An extremely responsible job, the person needs to have very good communication skills to interface with clients and colleagues.

The person holds responsibility for the entire accounting function which ranges from payroll, ledger control, and production of monthly/annual accounts, budgets, forecasts and a constant interface with the Managing Director on all related subjects.

The management of the finance team/personnel, preparing and managing all the financial accounts, statutory accounts, forecasting and reporting.

Management Accounting, Profit & Loss, budgets and variance analysis are the other key functions of a Company Accountant. The preparation and presentation of monthly MIS and analysis to the Management/Directors, setting up monitoring systems, advice on costing and decision critical inputs to the management, dealing with banks for working capital and term loan requirements and last but not the least the Finalization of Company Accounts.

A veritable responsibility for one who pursues this career but a rewarding industry after one learns the ropes and intricacies of the job.

Company Secretary

A company Secretary holds a very responsible position as he is responsible for the efficient running of that organisation. The person is expected to co-ordinate with the other departments, ensure the compliance of company legislations and advise the Directors on all the statutory requirements of the organisation.

His other functions include looking after finance, legal and administrative responsibilities. They are also responsible for formulating long and short term policies, programmes and other accounting and finance functions.

On a broader perspective, a Company Secretary holds the crucial responsibility of amalgamations, collaborations, acquisitions and expansion opportunities, keeping a keen eye on the capital and stock markets and advising the Directors on related issues.

An extremely responsible position, the job profile also involves playing the confidant to the Board of Directors and play the role of mediators between the management and the shareholders effectively and to the hilt.

A Company Secretary’s job involves dealing with the key and sensitive issues of the organisation and demands complete trust of the person. The person is also expected to be very organised, disciplined and have a thorough knowledge of not only his various key subjects but also a discerning eye to understand and analyse the emerging trends of the market.

Being a Company Secretary involves a direct association with the top rung of the Management of the organisation, being party to the most sensitive and confidential issues of the most and being tight-lipped about the same. Absolute confidentiality and complete dedication to the organisation is demanded of the person.

A very amicable and strong personality with thorough knowledge of the entire spectrum of subjects associated with this profession, the ability to deal with internal and external clients and the ambition to work towards maximizing the profitability of the organisation are the characteristics of an outstanding and efficient Company Secretary.

A full-fledged degree course in the subject qualifies a person to step into this challenging industry. The growth prospects are enormous with a lot of power and authority vested in the person who can move on to Corporate Consultancy and Advisory functions.

Compliance Manager

A Compliance Manager’s job involves for the provision of a quality risk & compliance service at all times. This is to ensure that business is in adherence with relevant regulatory / statutory requirements.

To provide a specialized risk and compliance service to customers in line with the agreed business objectives and to meet all relevant internal and external regulatory/statutory requirements. The individual has to be qualified to establish and maintain controls as well as monitor, manage and mitigate risks. The job further involves the reviewing and the resolving of various risk and compliance issues.

Very often these issues are sensitive and have to be dealt with in the most practical manner by the Compliance Manager. A Compliance Manager has to undertake detailed risk and compliance reviews and analysis on a regular basis. The person has to be well-versed in identifying trends and issues and submitting recommendations for requisite action to be taken by the Management.

Another important function of a Compliance Manager is to inform about all non-compliance and risk issues to the concerned personnel for appropriate and remedial action to be taken. He will also have to provide guidance and support whenever necessary, and ensure that such issues are reported in accordance with established procedures and guidelines
Identifying and reviewing recommendations to bring about improvements to various processes, practices and procedures, communicating and implementing changes with the minimum of disruption ensuring that these are understood by all the affected personnel.

A Compliance Manager also has to create and maintain the compliance training database and initiate training programmes to all staff to ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities.

The minimum qualifications demand a Post-graduate degree in Chartered accountancy, or a degree course in CS or even Finance.

Consultant

Consultants are highly skilled specialists in a wide range of subjects. These experienced professionals have the wisdom of their areas of knowledge and the experience in those areas which give them a tremendous edge over the management of various issues. A Consultant’s chief role entails the initiating and implementing of technological and behavioral changes.

Management Consultants are expected to provide a broad range of their expertise to the other departments like marketing or production, customer service and even sales. They need to initiate new and better systems. They also provide for objective appraisals and offer their support during contingencies like new changes or the development in new areas of management.

To qualify as a Consultant one must have be intelligent enough to understand the needs of the clients and believe in the best possible services towards their customers. An amicable personality with excellent communication skills, an enquiring mind and the integrity to understand the entire scope of the world of management and people.

The specialised sectors of this career are Human Resources, Business Strategy, Finance controls, and Management controls, Information Technology, Environmental Management and Quality Control.

The job of a Consultant requires an over-all expertise of wisdom and one has to hold a Management degree with accompanying training programmes in relevant areas to enhance one’s own personal development and further their progress in the organisation.

Credit Controller


The responsibilities of a Credit Controller are vast and range from control over Debtors, Credit, management of large and small accounts, timely completion of credit applications, ensuring the insurance coverage of clients, maintenance of the Sales Ledger, Bank Receipts, Month-end procedures/Reporting and Reconciliations.

A Credit Controller’s duties involve a constant clearance of all backlogs and maintenance of the ledger books up to the mark. A credit controller has to make a constant follow-up on all debt transactions on a regular basis. The person has to be competent to identify risks, allocate and reconcile figures.

Individuals must qualify with the required academic background and have working experience of SAGE. A Credit Controller must have excellent communications skills. The person should possess expertise in customer service, have the aptitude for negotiation and should have the competencies to be able to interact effectively with people from all the departments of the organisation.

A person with a pleasing personality, with a lot of conviction and knowledge of all related areas, computer skills will fit this profile efficiently.

An interesting job that requires a lot of patience, mental skills and a sharp mind, it also is rewarding by virtue of the incentives it offers to achievers in the form of various perks and recognition of one’s productive efforts.

Credit Manager

Credit Managers are responsible for controlling and protecting the debts which clients owe to their organisation. A Credit Manager has to have a strong customer focus, good commercial awareness and a people’s person capable of building effective working relationships with all concerned management. A Credit Controller reports to the Financial Controller and his portfolio includes innumerable responsibilities. With various kinds of assistance in the form of referrals or sales leads given by the organisation, the Credit Manager is required to make effective sales of a range of financial services and products to customers. These could be credit cards, real estate loans etc

The Credit Manager is responsible for accurate reporting and accounting of the Commercial division of any organisation. The person has to closely work with clients both telephonically and in person, catering to their needs and queries especially in matters of application and approvals of credit.

Besides maintaining healthy relationships with clients, a Credit Manager is also responsible for provision of accurate reports for the senior management on a regular basis, reviewing the structure, process and systems of the credit control function, recruiting/training of staff and their constant development to enhance productivity.

A Credit Manager must possess strong leadership qualities, is an astute decision maker and extremely focused. Computer literacy with relevant skills is a must. The person should be a go-getter who believes in achieving the goals set for him.

The growth prospects for this profile are excellent with progressive incentives and promotions are based on individual performances and productivity. Individuals can rise to the positions of Senior Finance Manager and even Director. Ambitious and successful individuals can become successful advisors, consultants and entrepreneurs.

While there are certificate and diploma courses to qualify individuals, most organisations prefer individuals who hold a professional degree form the Institute of Credit Management.
